Le Temps suspendu

« Ô Temps suspends ton vol… »

Woher kommt mir Hilfe?
Meine Hilfe kommt vom Herrn,
der Himmel und Erde gemacht hat.
Er wird deinen Fuß nicht gleiten lassen,
und der dich behütet, schläft nicht.
Siehe, der Hüter Israels schläft
und schlummert nicht.
Der Herr behütet dich;

In the Penal Colony, texte de Franz Kafka

How different things were before the valley was mobbed a day in advance.

They all came to watch early in the morning

the old commander showed up with his ladies.

All the chairs were filled every single one.

The machine was polished and glistening

people on tip-toe as far as the hills in front of a hundred eyes

the old commander placed the condemned man under the harrow.

No Jarring note to disturb the running of the machine.

Every one knew justice was being done and then the execution.

In the hush we heard the man’s sighs muffled by the gag.

Then came the sixth hour eb-very one wanted to watch up close.

Wise as he was the old commander ordered that children be given preference.

I would stand close with a child in each arm.

How deeply we took in the transfigured expression from the tortured face.

How intensely our cheeks basked in the glow of that justice

attained at last and already fading.

Wonderful times my friend

Wonderful times.

For Kate, Textes de William Shakespeare

1. The Tempest Act III  Scene 2 (Caliban)
“Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises,
Sounds, and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears; and sometime voices,
That, if I then had waked after long sleep,
Will make me sleep again: and then, in dreaming,
The clouds methought would open, and show riches
Ready to drop upon me; that, when I waked,
I cried to dream again.”

2. Sonnet 18

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall Death brag thou wand'rest in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grows't:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.

3. The Tempest Act IV Scene 1 (Prospero)

Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air; into thin air,
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.

4. The Tempest Epilogue (Prospero)

But release me from my bands
With the help of your good hands:
Gentle breath of yours my sails
Must fill, or else my project fails,
Which was to please. Now I want
Spirits to enforce, art to enchant,
And my ending is despair,
Unless I be relieved by prayer,
Which pierces so that it assaults
Mercy itself and frees all faults.
As your offense would pardon'd be,
Let your indulgence set me free.
